What Makes a Pokémon Plush Toy Rare?
Pokémon is one of the most famous and popular anime and game franchises, so how can certain toys be hard to find? Pokémon has been a global phenomenon for more than 25 years and continues to enchant fans around the world. While many plushies, keychains, figurines, and other products are available from retailers worldwide, others are available in limited quantities.
For example, many products only hit shelves in Japan at select Pokémon Center stores and made their way into U.S. circulation from the online resale market. The limited access makes these products rare and bumps up their resale price. A simple lack of supply yet high demand has some fans paying hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars for the rarest Pokémon plushies.
Where Can You Find Rare Pokémon Plushies?
Fair Game Retro is a great place to find a variety of Pokémon plush toys, trading cards, and more. Our team can help you find what you're looking for and expand your collection. If you're searching for the world's rarest Pokémon plushies, like the top five we're about to reveal, resale sites are typically your best bet.
Dedicated collectors can scour the internet in hopes of finding these products up for sale or auction, but they are not always readily available.
The Top 5 Rarest Pokémon Plushies
With over 1,000 memorable monsters within the Pokémon franchise, you can find countless plush toys in all shapes and sizes featuring your favorite Pokémon. Let's explore five of these toys that hit the market and are rare finds today.
1. Gigantamax Meowth
This is not only one of the rarest Pokémon plushies, but one of the largest too. The Gigantamax Meowth plush toy stands taller than some Pokémon fans at five feet five inches. Although the 2021 release date makes this one of the newer Pokémon products on the market, the manufacturer only made a small quantity.
You may be able to find this plush that comes from the Pokémon Sword and Shield game on sites like eBay for upwards of $1,000. If you're lucky enough to buy it, just make sure you have enough storage space to fit this massive plush!
2. Giant Furret
If you think it's difficult to find a plush toy that tops the Gigantamax Meowth in size, the Giant Furret is here to break that record. This toy comes in at just under six feet long with a total length measurement of 70.87 inches. It measures almost 15 inches wide and weighs 72 pounds, making it a hefty collector's item for only the most devoted fans.
When the Pokémon Center Japan released this plush in 2019, it sold for $350; but eager buyers boost the price on resale sites to as much as $2,500. Only a few Giant Furret plushes are available for purchase despite catering to the wide fanbase through Japanese Pokémon Centers and the American Pokémon Center website. This plush is actually taller than the average Japanese citizen by a few inches but nonetheless, dedicated Pokémon fans can't get enough, so you might have trouble finding one for a fair price.
3. Dittochu
What happens when you fuse one of the most recognizable Pokémon figures with the playful character Ditto, who aptly mimics other Pokémon? The result is Dittochu, an adorable plushie that looks like Pikachu but with Ditto's face. This plush first hit the market in 2010, making it one of the oldest products on this list.
Dittochu was part of the Pokémon Cente Japan's Rainbow Series and is only available in select quantities. Part of the lure of this specific item centers around the material of Dittochu's fur, which manufacturers no longer use. If you happen to spot this plush on a resale site, chances are you'll see it selling for about $200, though prices hit a few thousand dollars at one point.
4. Giant Eevee Plush Present
While Eevee is one of the most beloved Pokémon, many of the Eevee plushes are extremely rare. For example, the Eeveelution Christmas plush set, which features a whimsical holiday design for each of Eevee's famous evolutions can sell for several thousand dollars on resale sites.
For this list, however, we're focusing on the one toy that's even harder to come by. The Giant Eevee Plush Present is by far one of the rarest Pokémon plushies in the world. First released in 2012, this impressive plush measures nearly three feet tall and was a pivotal piece of Banpresto's I Love Eevee campaign that celebrates the legendary Pokémon and all its evolutions.
The Giant Eevee Plush Present, in particular, is the most sought-after product from the entire campaign, since only 20 products were made. Fans needed to enter a lottery in hopes of getting their hands on one of the few plushes available. This extensive process required going to participating arcades and winning an I Love Eevee Bag-hang plush to earn a ticket into the lottery.
Because there are less than two dozen Giant Eevee plushies available, you'll be hard-pressed to find one floating around on a retail site. Prospective buyers can expect to buy exorbitant prices for this rare find, as one Giant Eevee Plush Present sold for over $5,000 years ago.
5. Giant Entei, Raikou, and Suicune
Rounding out our list of the five rarest Pokémon plushies is actually a trio of giant toys. Pokémon's famous dogs Entei, Raikou, and Suicune were part of the franchise's first line of giant plushes along with the following characters:
- Pikachu
- Tyanitar
- Lugia
- Snorlax
- Lapras
These giant plushes date back to 2001 and initially only hit shelves at the Pokémon Center in New York and Tokyo. Finding these products today is like hitting the jackpot since they rarely become available for resale but amass a sale price of a few thousand dollars. A plush featuring any of these three Legendary Beasts must come from the original release in order to be valuable.
What If You Can't Find the Five Rarest Pokémon Plushies?
While it's exciting to add a new plush to your collection, the feeling is even more intense knowing you have a rare collectible that is one of just a few in the world. More often than not, however, it's unlikely that you'll be able to snatch these products from the resale market before anyone else. Don't worry if you're out of luck finding these rare collectibles, though!
